Toilet Paper Spray Reviews
The best way to clean yourself after a bowel movement is with a bidet, but when you don’t have access to one of those, wet wipes can be very helpful. However, “flushable” wet wipes have been getting bad press for causing damage to sewer systems and for not being environmentally friendly.
So what should you do if you do not have a bidet but also don’t want to use wet wipes? You can use toilet paper sprays, foams, and gels. Each bottle is equivalent to about 200 wet wipes. Apply these products to your toilet paper and get fully clean. Many of these wet wipe alternatives come in travel sizes, too, making pooping in public or on vacation more comfortable.
Why not just wet your toilet paper?
You may have tried making your own wet wipes by wetting your toilet paper under a faucet. This tactic gets messy and is not effective. Toilet paper sprays and other wet wipe alternatives are formulated to clean without the toilet paper ripping or leaving any paper behind. The ingredients in these products are also intended to be cleansing and soothing.
My Rankings
I reached out to six companies that make wet wipe and bidet alternatives and each sent me complimentary samples of their products to review. I tested them over several weeks and with a variety of stool consistencies. With each use, I first wiped with dry, high-quality toilet paper and then followed up with each product on the same high-quality toilet paper.
1. Fresh Peaches Co.
This toilet paper gel provided me with the best overall cleaning experience. I was excited that it was gel, which is unique. The sensation was similar to lube, which was surprisingly nice and effective. Unlike foam, the gel had a cooling effect that I really appreciated. I was expecting a peach scent because of the company’s name but there is no fragrance. I love the refillable, travel-sized dispenser included in the starter kit, too.
You only need one pump of the Fresh Peaches gel. I would also suggest blotting dry after you use it.
Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Hamamelis Virginiana Extract (Witch Hazel), Hydroxyethylcellulose, Panthenol (Vitamin B5), Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract (Green Tea Extract), Propanediol, Gluconolactone and Sodium Benzoate.
Scent: Unscented
Price: $16
2. Pristine Sprays
Pristine spray turns toilet paper into a near-perfect wet wipe. Be sure to spray the entire surface of the toilet paper using about 4 sprays.
I sprayed my toilet paper, wiped my butt, folded the toilet paper, sprayed it again, and wiped again. I used this on a day when my stool was loose.
The coconut amber scent was surprisingly relaxing. Or maybe it was just refreshing to smell something different than Cottonelle wet wipes.
Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel) Water, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Vegetable Glycerin, Polysorbate 80, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Kernel Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (Fractionated Coconut Oil), Propanediol, Pentylene Glycol, Citric Acid, Phenethyl Alcohol, Potassium Sorbate, Natural Fragrance Oil
Scent: Coconut Amber
Price: $12.56
3. Qleanse
Qleanse was the best toilet paper foam that I tested. Foam is a whole different experience and sensation than a wet wipe. It’s fluffy and my instinct was to use it like foaming hand soap: lather and repeat. I had a few test runs before I figured out the best technique: dry wipe, then use one to two pumps of foam, spread it out a little on the toilet paper, wipe (not rub), and then blot dry. You may need to repeat this if you did not have a ghost wipe.
I ranked Qleanse lower than the gel and spray simply because there was no cooling effect. Qleanse foams nicely onto the toilet paper but it is the same temperature as my body. For a person who suffers from hemorrhoids, I like a little burst of cold moisture after a bowel movement.
Qleanse calls their scent “Fresh”. This word makes me think of a tree-shaped car freshener but the actual scent of Qleanse is very subtle and relaxing. They use essential oil, which is far better for your skin than chemical fragrance.
Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Aloe Vera, Vegetable Glycerin, Allantoin, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Citric Acid, Lavender Essential Oil, Phenoxyethanol and Ethylhexylglycerin
Scent: Fresh (Lavender)
Price: $11.99
4. TUSHÉ
If you are ready to commit to toilet paper foam, then a high-tech dispenser like TUSHÉ is for you. After charging the dispenser for a few hours, I filled it, and tested it. I only used one small pump, which was not enough for me. The dispenser allows you to adjust the amount of foam that is dispensed so I plan to increase this before my next use.
I was overwhelmed by the initial experience because of the learning curve. I just wanted to poop, clean my butt, and get out of the bathroom. But if you are ready to make a lifestyle change and do not have children that will use this as a toy, this would be a good option for you.
Ingredients: Deionized water, Caprylyl glucoside, Glyceride, Witch Hazel, Vitamin B5, Vitamin E, Chamomile, Organic Green Tea, Organic Aloe, Polysorbate 20, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate
Scent: Unscented
Price: $39 (dispenser only)
5. Poof!
Poof was by far the most beautifully packaged of the toilet paper sprays that I tested. They even have sleek travel sprays in small, business card-shaped containers. I tried the Tidal scent and it smells so amazing that I wanted to wear it as a body spray.
Although Poof is a beautiful product, I was disappointed with Poof’s claim that it is “100% all natural”. The ingredients listed on the label include non-natural ingredients like Polysorbate 20 and fragrance. These ingredients are not unusual to body care products but the “all natural” claim is misleading.
Ingredients: Water, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf (Aloe Vera Gel) Juice, Polysorbate-20, Hamamelis Virginiana (Witch Hazel), Zemea (Corn) Propanediol, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Glycerin, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Oil, Scented Oil (Fragrance), Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin
Scent: Tidal
Price: $20
6. Refresh
Refresh is a top-rated wet wipe alternative on Amazon and I think this is because of its affordable price. I tested their fragrance-free spray and while it was better than dry toilet paper, it was not smooth. I had to wipe and repeat twice before feeling somewhat clean and some toilet paper was left behind.
I love that witch hazel is a primary ingredient since that reduces inflammation. But be sure to get their new, “free” formula that does not include alcohol.
Ingredients: Purified Water, Witch Hazel (alcohol-free), Glycerin, Aloe Vera, Phenoxyethanol, Methylcellulose
Scent: Unscented
Price: $8.13
Should you use toilet paper sprays, foams, and gels?
Yes. Although I wish these products were made of natural ingredients, I recommend using them (especially Fresh Peaches Co. and Pristine products). My gold standard for cleaning after a bowel movement will always be a bidet but these are great backup options
